The Belgian authorities have confirmed media reports that during several months in 2005 they “registered” the conversations that Philip Dewinter - a far-right Member of Parliament and he leader of the Vlaams Belang Party’s Antwerp chapter - held on his mobile phone. The authorities wanted to know whether Dewinter was receiving information from Antwerp police officers. They say that they had not eavesdropped on Philip Dewinter’s conversations, but had only registered who was talking to the politician. Mr. Dewinter expressed his doubts about this. Dewinter says that not only his mobile phone, but also those of his personal assistant, the secretary of the VB parliamentary group and the head of the party’s security service were screened. Until today, Belgian officials did not yet react on these allegations. Totalitarianism has reached Belgium, the epic center of the European Union, where MP’s no longer enjoy their constitutional rights and liberties. They are hence handed over to medieval arbitrary control of their work by the executive branch.
