We were in particular tempted by Mr. Sterckx’s opinion about EU reform.
We have to transform the European Council into a directly elected second chamber, like the senate in the United States, which will really represent the regions and peoples of Europe, rather than the member states only.Liberal MEP Dirk Sterckx also believed that the future of the European Union is now laying in the hand of the regions, rather than the states. Therefor, he expressed his support to one of Nova Libertas’ viewpoints about the EU issue of Court access. Nova Libertas is a longtime fighter for direct regional access to the Court of Justice for the European Communities in Luxembourg, which is still only accessible for “national” member states.
Nova Libertas also defends the ideal of direct democracy via referendum. The democratic deficit of the EU is one of the main causes of the current impasse. Mr. Sterckx explained the almost impossible and counter-productive monthy déménagement from their headquarters in Brussels to their desks in Strasbourg. This monthly trip is believed to be worth over 200 million US Dollars annualy in the overhaul annual EU budget. Mr. Sterckx opposed this waste of taxpayers’ money. He was also in favor of bringing all institutions to Brussels. This opinion is shared by a huge number of MEP’s. Only the French MEP’s refuse to talk about this issue. Thanks to the necessity of unanimity in the European Council, the French government can - and will - block any attempt of the parliament to proclame Brussels as the only capital of Europe. Nova Libertas was filled with disbelief and felt a quiet unyeilding anger when we took notice of the costs of this monthly change of work location.
NL and Sterckx supported the Bolkestein’s directive, which was intrinsically good in order to increase the crossboarder competition inside the EU and to lower the prices of consumption goods. This directive - however too much changed under the impulse of leftist political groups - reinvents the real foundation of Europe, its free market.
Nova Libertas will continue its work and will never cease supporting these MEP’s who share our points of view. Mr. Sterckx can count on our support in his struggle for a better Europe.

Europa is niet sexy genoeg om erover te praten. Maar toch zal ik het maar doen.
1 mei 2004 werd de belangrijkste dag in de geschiedenis van de Europese Unie. 10 nieuwe landen vervoegden dan 15 huidige lidstaten van de Unie. Niet alleen kwantitatief werd het de grootste stap voorwaarts voor de Europese constructie, ook kwalitatief.
De tien nieuwe landen hebben zich de voorbije jaren ernstig moeten inspannen om hun staatsinstellingen, rechtsorganisatie, economie en wetgeving op te tillen naar het vereiste niveau dat de Unie vroeg. De weg van Kopenhagen ’93 naar Kopenhagen ’02 was lang en hard, maar de feestvierders op 1 mei lieten dat even niet aan hun hart komen.
Toch is nog lang niet alles koek en ei binnen de EU na die bewuste 1 mei. Zowel bij de besluitvormers als bij de bevolking, zowel bij de oude als de nieuwe lidstaten blijven er vragen omtrent werkbaarheid en doel van een Unie met 25 (en meer). De Eurobarometer vertoont sinds enige tijd opnieuw een zekere vorm van euroscepticisme bij de burger in Europa.
We kunnen dus wel degelijk spreken van een kloof tussen Europa en zijn burgers. - At 20:32 Anoniem said...
