Second, there was secularism. People who have the state taking care of them from the cradle to the grave no longer need God. The welfare state also intentionally undermined religion to crush the spirit of freedom among its subjects. And it undermined demographics, because people who do not believe in God do not believe in the future and see children as a burden. Third, a wholly new danger emerged, namely that of welfare immigration -- the immigration of people, increasingly from cultures which have not been shaped by the basic forces of European civilization, who come purely for the purpose of claiming benefits. Take Holland, for example, Europe's equivalent of San Francisco. This is Pelosi Land. The Dutch are pampered by an extensive welfare system. They were the first in Europe to legalize abortion, euthanasia and homosexual "marriage." Today, Islam is filling the void that was left when the Dutch created a religious vacuum in the heart of their culture. There are already 1 million Muslims in the Netherlands out of a total population of 16 million.
Their number is rising fast because the Muslims are fecund while the secularist Dutch have hardly any offspring. The native Dutch are moving out. Since 2004, more indigenous Dutchmen have emigrated each year than immigrants have moved in. People who have lost faith in God do not fight. They run. Since they do not believe in life after death, this life is the only thing they have to lose. One emigrant Dutchman, a homosexual author who lives in Brussels, writes: "I am not a warrior. I do not fight for freedom. I am only good at enjoying it." This mentality has affected the whole of Western Europe. A young German woman recently said that it is "better to let yourself be raped than risk injuries while resisting, better to avoid fighting than risk death." Europe has chosen the path of submission. Islamization is not the cause but the consequence of the collapse of Europe. The very word Islam means "submission." Many have submitted already. In that sense, they are already Muslims.
At the root of the collapse of Western Europe's civilization is the self-inflicted disease of welfarism. It saps people of the strength to take care of themselves, to stand up for their rights, to fight for their freedoms. And yet, while the European example is there for all to see, Mr. Obama’s Administration and Mrs. Pelosi's Congress want to introduce the same in America. Today, the Europeans are creating a supranational welfare system, the European Union (EU). After having sacrificed their liberties for cradle-to-grave security, they are now sacrificing their centuries-old nation-states. Some Americans think that the EU is a kind of United States of Europe. They are wrong. While the U.S. Constitution protects the liberties of the people, the EU constitution abolishes them. While the U.S. Constitution recognizes an authority higher than the state -- God -- the EU constitution deliberately refrains from mentioning God.
On Jan. 16, Europe's Nancy Pelosi -- the newly elected speaker of the European Parliament, a German Christian-Democrat called Hans-Gert Poettering -- announced that he will not press for a reference to God in the EU constitution because he wants to be a "fair and objective" speaker. Europe's contemporary culture is one of "repudiation," a culture based on negatives for every aspect of the traditional European heritage (Christianity, monogamous marriage, national loyalty, monocultural identity and so on). This is the culture that Mr. Obama and Mrs. Pelosi want to introduce in America. But look at what Europe has become. Its refusal to uphold the old forms of moral and civil order make it impossible to curb the welfare state, to control immigration, to maintain order in the cities. If America follows Mr. Obama’s and Mrs. Pelosi's lead, this is what it will get. Welcome to the future, look at Europe.

De volgende vijf filmpjes zijn mij tijdens de jongste Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen het beste meegevallen in positieve zin van respectievelijk Barack Obama, Joe Biden, John McCain, Sarah Palin en Ron Paul.

Barack Obama maakte van alle mainstream-kandidaten het beste gebruik van de nieuwe communicatiemiddelen zoals het internet. Verder werkte hij doorgaans ook met veel "grassroots" bewegingen en kon hij jongeren achter zijn campagne scharen. Eén van de leukste en meest originele "grassroots" initiatieven rond de campagne van Barack Obama was het typetje "Obama Girl" van de satirische website "Barely Political". Meer dan 25 miljoen surfers bekeken de twintig originele YouTube-filmpjes waarin tienermodel Amber Lee Ettinger in de huid van Obama Girl kroop. En het nummer "I have got a crush on Obama" gaf Ettinger onmiddellijk de status van internetfenomeen.

Joe Biden was op voorhand al bekend voor de onvoorzichtige uitspraken die maar al te vaak in zijn speeches naar boven kwamen en ook in de campagne maakte hij de verwachtingen waar. We kennen allemaal nog zijn verzoek aan staatssenator Graham om tijdens een speech even recht te staan zodat de ganse zaal hem zou kunnen zien, niet wetende dat Graham verlamd was en aan zijn rolstoel gekluisterd zat. Maar los van deze gaffels had Biden bij mij soms toch ook enige positieve impact. In een interview met Shalom-TV wond hij er immers geen doekjes om dat hij een overtuigd Zionist was en Israël steeds zou blijven steunen, ongeacht de situatie. Hiermee verzekerde hij Obama van ongezien veel steun vanuit de joodse gemeenschap. En met de latere benoeming van Emmanuel Rahm als kabinetschef maakte Obama het werk af. De Democraten trokken, ondanks Obama's huidskleur, in deze verkiezing meer joodse stemmen naar zich toe dan in 2000 of 2004.

John McCain stemde in de senaat in meer dan 90% van de keren mee met George W. Bush, zo blijkt uit zijn "voting record", maar toch bleef hij volhouden een "maverick" te zijn. De voorverkiezingen verliepen moeizaam, maar uiteindelijk kozen de Republikeinen toch voor de persoon die ze in 2000 ook al bijna geselecteerd hadden. Mitt Romney was Mormoons en flipflopte iets te vaak om geloofwaardig te zijn. Rudy Giuliani was te sociaal-liberaal voor een partij die meer op het diepconservatieve zuiden mikt. En Mike Huckabee of Ron Paul waren misschien net iets té grote mavericks voor de GOP in deze tijden. Senator McCain werd overal op handen gedragen, kandidaat McCain overal uitgespuwd. Zelfs traditionele pro-McCain-media als "The Economist" en "The Wall Street Journal" kozen uiteindelijk partij voor Obama. De enige - én laatste - keer dat we de échte John McCain nog eens aan het werk gezien hebben in de campagne was tijdens zijn prachtige nederlaagspeech. John McCain is een groots man. Jammer dat net die status in zijn vuile smeercampagne niet meer naar de voorgrond gebracht werd. Het had anders gekund.

Gouverneur Sarah Palin werd achteraf unisono als "liability" voor McCains ticket afgeschilderd, maar dat lijkt me een iets te vlugge conclusie. Uiteindelijk zijn het de vuile anti-propaganda van McCain en de economische crisis geweest die de verkiezing in het voordeel van Barack Obama hebben doen eindigen. Sarah Palin heeft zeker fouten gemaakt, dat ontken ik ook niet, maar grosso modo genomen, was zij wel degelijk een meerwaarde voor het Republikeins ticket. Haar aanvaardingsspeech op de GOP-conventie was in mijn ogen haar hoogtepunt. Ze enthousiasmeerde de traditionele conservatieven op ethisch en socio-economisch vlak, en haar aanvallen op de linkse elite uit New England en de Ivy League-universiteiten vielen uitermate in de smaak bij grote lagen van de bevolking. De heksenjacht op Palin in de media heeft haar imago zeker schade toegebracht, maar als ze zich beter wapent tegen dit soort aanvallen en zich beter voorbereidt op haar mogelijke volgende run, dan geef ik haar in 2012 zelfs nog alle kansen op het vice-presidentsschap, of zelfs het presidentsschap.

En natuurlijk kan ook congreslid Ron Paul in dit rijtje niet ontbreken. Als overtuigd libertariër en constitutionalist keek hij aan tegen een zéér zware race. In de steek gelaten door zijn partij en tegengewerkt door "big business" dat de ideeën van Ron Paul liever niet teveel in D.C. ziet opduiken, bleef Ron Paul vasthouden aan zijn idealen. En niet zonder succes. Het libertarisme heeft nog nooit zo'n zichtbare verdediger gehad als de laatste maanden. En ook financieel heeft deze race iets bewezen. Als individuen écht in een politicus geloven, heeft die géén "corporate sponsors" nodig om een campagne op poten te zetten. De "Ron Paul Revolution" is strikt genomen dan al wel voorbij, de ideeën leven verder, en méér en méér jongeren lijken daarvoor gewonnen.
